Dr. Rayappa is an accomplished Head & Neck and Skull Base
Surgeon
with prolific experience spanning over 30 years. He graduated from Madras Medical College, Chennai, India in 1982 and had surgical training in ENT – Head & Neck Surgery in UK and completed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1989. Later, he worked at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a tertiary care hospital with focused care for head and neck cancer. Throughout his career he visited many centres in Europe and USA to learn from the world pioneers in lateral and endoscopic skull base surgery.
He moved back to India in 1995 and established the Department of Head & Neck and Skull Base Surgery at Apollo Cancer Centre, Chennai. He has performed extensive surgeries of the Head and Neck region (for cancers of mouth, throat, sinus, larynx, salivary gland and thyroid). He was one the first to perform Skull Base Surgery in India at that time.
He is well-experienced in lateral skull base surgeries including temporal bone resections and complex infratemporal fossa approaches for clearance of rare jugular foramen tumours like glomus jugulare. He has treated more than 50 cases of glomus jugulare tumours over the last 25 years, with excellent outcome on facial nerve function and tumour clearance.
His use of advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques with the aid of endoscope, Laser and robotic-technology aim at providing improved quality of life without compromising cancer clearance. He applies the comprehensive surgical experience he has obtained over the years in choosing apt surgical approaches for difficult advanced tumours. He is supported by an experienced multi-disciplinary team comprising of skilled neurosurgeons and plastic surgeons who focus on ensuring complete disease clearance, reduced morbidity and excellent reconstructions of complex defects following extensive surgeries.
