The

“lateral skull base” is located at the side of the skull

(Fig.1). This portion of the skull base includes structures called the temporal bone (most of the ear is within this bone), infratemporal fossa, clivus, and middle and posterior fossae.
Lateral skull base surgery can be used to treat conditions like meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, encephaloceles, cholesteatomas, schwannomas, glomus jugulare tumors, and malignant tumors of the ear and temporal bone.
