Oesophageal Speech

Oesophageal Speech

Oesophageal speech is a method of speaking used by some people who have had their larynx, or voice box, removed due to cancer.

To produce oesophageal speech, the speaker must swallow air into their oesophagus, or food pipe, and then release the air in controlled bursts, which creates sound vibrations that can be formed into speech. This technique requires a great deal of practice and control, as the speaker must learn to manipulate the muscles in their throat and oesophagus to produce different sounds and intonations.
